REVIEW:: Psylent Night 3 @ Pure

Filed under: Review, downtown wpg, music, winnipeg, would you? — Tags: , , — KingORock @ 4:29 am December 14, 2009

First off: I don’t know shit about “psytrance“. I took this one for the team.

+1 Pure Nightclub was a lot better venue than I had expected. Both rooms had nice lights & decent sound. Check out this shi~~y cellphone shot from the main room:

Future lazers and dancin' -> looks like the weekend

Local guy; Chris Komus was on the wheez of steel (which were obvi plaztic) when we got there. According to my sources: he was throwing down some hard, old skool trance music. All I know is that the people were drugged and dancing. Taking each (un)predictable kick drum with enthusiasm.

WHOA~! i It’s a local Casey Anderson^***!

I've seen the 'energy ball' but never the energy bear*!

BOOOOOZE WUZZZ CONSOOOOOOMED

Then the Spaniard of the hour, Mad Maxx (not Madd Maxx) graced the DJ Booth.

dunt na na; dunt na na; dunt na na; dunt na na...

dunt na na; dunt na na; dunt na na; dunt na na...

I knew something had gone f*ckeye; I felt like dancing. Good bass. Good breakdowns. An “I’m a euro-trance DJ that smiles to much” smile that kept it light. I have no background in the music; I can’t rate this show accurately; I’d say 8.61 outta 10.

Other Observations:

  • - 62% of the dudes were over-weight
  • - the not overweight dudes were 1) COmplete Nerdz 2) Drug sick
  • - Seeing people on lots of E is a pretty good reminder that you shouldn’t do E

Review: Love & Electrik @ the Pyramid

Filed under: Review, hype, music, winnipeg — Tags: , , , — KingORock @ 5:56 am December 7, 2009

This review came about by accident. I ended up at the Pyramid for this show after a prayer filled work christmas party. When I got there DJ Co-op and DJ Hunnicut were on stage warming up the dance floor.

I thought the Hunnicur/Co-op team was pretty solid; but rumor has it that they play the same set all the time. I dunno…… The DJ’ing was good; their clothes were server-room chic; someone should take the mic away.

As for the feature band of the night Love & Electric:

Dont let the blurry foto fool you. it was a pretty ackshunless

They kicked off their set with some whiteboy kick snare action; coupled with the Altered Images esque vocals. Meh. The asian vocoder kid doubled his dance floor with a Phil Colins cover and they continued to get the wooly hippie chicks moving with some more 80s inspired dancability.

The Queen overheard this in the girls bathroom:

I’d buy their ticket back to vancouver right now. I’d get on stage and give it to them. My dad sounds better when he’s taking a dump. I’d fly them out of here myself if I had a plane. I’m kind of afraid of the indie kids tho, so I’m yelling this in the bathroom. Square glasses are scarey.

Overall: 7.2 out of 10 with a staying power factor of about 3.

O.K. -> probably a huge hit with lesbians (like shiny toy guns)

Show Review: Moneen, Sights and Sounds, Passenger Action

Filed under: hype, music, news, winnipeg — Tags: , , , — KingORock @ 8:59 pm December 1, 2009

November 30th 2009 – Winnipeg’s revamped West End Cultural Center was the site of rocking, rolling and dudes singing about feelings. It was my first visit to the West End Cultural center since it’s make over and I must say; Volunteers suck at pouring beer. Look at this shi~ >

$4 for some d!ck to pour a glass of foam - then $uccessfully empty a 1/4 of the actual beer he managed to get out*!

I will take part of the blame for this beer fiasco. I bought a Bulldog Amber Ale. Like many a Winnipegers it’s a tough pour.

As for the bands…..

Passenger Action
I’m listening to the myspace page right now. I’d have to say I like them better recorded than I did last night. They’re kinda like Moneen meets awkward changes & guitar delay. They are better than the UK Passenger Action 4 sho. I miss Choke.

Edmontonians + Tech-space-punk = ~7.68/10

Sights and Sounds
I didn’t realize this band had Winnipeg roots & I wish them the best, but daaamnn. Musically boring; though the white-belt, flat iron, eunuch children seemed to like them. Maybe I’m out of touch. Touch them on your space.

Winnipeggers who should stick to h@rdcore = ~5.11/10

Moneen
I saw these guys when they were young, drop kicking maniacs. Although they’ve grown up and focused their energy more on playing the right notes; Moneen still rocks (as much as this genre lets them).

The addition of laptops, keyboards and extra floor toms for everyone didn’t even seem pretentious. It added to layers to their songs and brought the crowd in. Kenny still manged some guitar spins & high kicks and that hippie still has those stank dreads.

Still artfully explosive = ~8.98/10
