#REVIEW: Peanuts & Corn – 15 Year Anniversary

Filed under: Review, music, winnipeg — KingORock @ 5:29 pm December 30, 2009

Peanuts & Corn Records; Winnipeg rap veterans; celebrated 15 years “in the game” on Monday night (dec 28 2k9) at the Lo Pub.

It was apparent when we got there that shi~ was gonna get major; This chick was knitting:

Bloww~! Bloww>! Purled Ladder stitchez Bitchez

Bloww~! Bloww>! Purled Ladder stitchez Bitchez

Yarn & ironic glasses aside; this show was brought to us by Mass Appeal (DJ’s Kutdown and Kinetic) as part of their Monday night Rap throwdown. If you like rap; these guys know it. Drop by on a Monday night.

Show opened up with Yy (pronounced Y-eye) around 11 (because rap shows always start late).

Winnipeg's slap-choppuh of tha syllables

Yy busted out some old songs and dropped a couple new ones off his upcoming P & C release. Look for one with “Pain for punishment” as the chorus.

Schmoke Break

Pip Skid was up next and brought the energy up with him. Skizzy was lookin’ all respon$ible with a full head of hair and smile on his face.

"Slam it don't sip..." ---> Preach on Poppa Pip*!

His set rolled heavy with a short cover of ‘Beth’ by KISS; a Wynrush appearance and $ome real Marathon of Dope shi~.

Up next; Farm Fresh. The Peanuts and Corn originators.

They brought the noise; all the old faves; squared off and bassed out. The crowd thinned a little, but the core remained on hand to remember with their ears.

Overall Score: 8.2 / 10 – Rap on brah

JE$US^*!

NO CHICKEN 4 YOU*!

NO CHICKEN 4 YOU*!

I checked the windows; there doesn’t seem to be any health code violations; it looks like a legit holiday for the owners.

Adjust your eating plans. Y’all are gunna have to wait for the lunch review.

Wearing a mask out in public is so ‘SARS’. Makes me wonder if your a$$ should really be out in public if you need one.

Maybe she’s just some kinda paranoid!?!

Fashion fail -> The pandemic starts here.

Christma$ Commando – Ridez -> #00003

The Manitoba rides section has been a bit neglected as of late; so here’s a gem I found at Chestnut & Preston last night::::

The Jeep - A p00n-wagon for all seasons

The Jeep - A p00n-wagon for all seasons

Notice the fine detailing in the ‘ramshackle / what’s around’ fenders -> topped off with a lovely holidayze bow.

Show drivers you’re in the xmas mood as you ram them in parking lots; trying to get your screaming 6 year old that new Elmo doll they’ll hate. Or, blast Boney M Christmas (with the top off of course) at ur local skating rinks.

Who’s king shi~

You r.

Some say that Winnipeg is where old music comes to die.

Don’t believe it.

The greatest of nu-metal lives on in the hearts of fans around the city. Check out this abs0lute devotion I saw on the str33tz today:

Culture & Cuisine: Minhaus Lime

If you’ve been with us for a while now; we’ve covered celebrities, Google streetview in Winnipeg and lunch downtown.

But where’s the drinks?

Ladies and gentleman; I bring you: Minhaus Lime

Discount Manitoba beer with a distinctly watered down finish

Discount Manitoba beer with a distinctly watered down finish

Minhaus was a late entry into this summers’ ‘lime in beer’ craze. At a hard hitting retail price of under $8/6 pack -> how could you go wrong?

  • Good ask.

You can’t. You want to drink. This will get you drunk.

Upside: It kinda tastes like they fermented sprite into drunkeness. Sooo at least it doesn’t taste as raw as Minhaus regular.

Downside: It’s only 4.9% booze, so you may want to go for something stronger if you’re looking for more than a winter pee.

Office Douche of the Week – #00002

The cafeteria in the Winnipeg Convention Center is another prime spot for avid-douche spotters. You want to see what the bottom of a bureaucratic rut looks like; drop by around 10 AM – Monday to Friday for a 45 minute long coffee reminder.

Speciman(?) A: Rocking a long Bruce Cockburn up top with some fitted (but pulled up too high) dress pants and the ever-present spectacles. His ‘clear vision’ and thoughtfully folded hands let you know he’s paying attention to the issues.

What do you want to talk?>? In-market initiatives? Ever-green documents? How about visible minorities? Anything is possible. He’ll form a steering committee to report to his director by next years end.

REVIEW: Chicago Phils $5 Lunch Special

Filed under: Lunch, Survival, downtown wpg, hype, winnipeg — Tags: , , — KingORock @ 6:43 pm December 14, 2009

Here’s the deal: Lunch for $5 tax included.

As the friendly young lady working there put it: “People don’t like to deal with change”.

You get:

    1. 2 slices of pizza
    2. 1 can drink
    3. A decent view of downtown

First off the pizza; what have you sold yourself into here?

Chicago Phils offers about 6 different pizza’s each day. There’s always vegetarian pizza options as well as a truly loaded pizza party for carnivores.

The pizza is pre-cooked, then oven heated when you order.

Non-bi(h)odegradable container is optional. Tell them you want a paper plate

Non-bi(h)odegradable container is optional. Tell them you want a paper plate

A word of caution: The food is hot. I burnt the inside of my mouth beautifully.

Hours later I was pulling sheets of burnt dead skin out of my mouth.

Anyway, back to food…

The pizza is hearty.

They seem to use real ingredients.

I was full when I had finished eating.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking this is a gourmet outing, the food is good (not mindblowingly great).

It’s nice to get out of my windowless office cell and feel like there is some space:::

A little foggy (due to that harsh winter shi~) but a break from the office all the same

A little foggy (due to that harsh winter shi~) but a break from the office all the same

Bottom Line: If you’re downtown :: Try it. It’s a good cheap lunch.
